Emptying the compost.

The last tomatoes from last summer.

After a really cold night warm air flowed in so we had some morning mist here this morning. I was a bit too tired to have a that early morning walk with the dogs so I missed most of it. It stayed chilly for quite some time but since we had no wind it actually felt rather wonderful when we finally went out 🙂

We’ve had sunshine all day and only a few clouds passed in the sky. Lots of deer running around and of course all the bird song made it feel like nothing was wrong in the world 🙂 I started to empty one of my composts and filled eight big pots and buckets plus my rather huge wheelbarrow. I emptied from the bottom up and when there was around a third left of the compost I stopped because I noticed that part needed a bit more time to be ready. That compost is said to be a hot compost even though the sides are really thin but they say it’s a new material that insulates really good. I’m inclined to agree but only until it is filled up to two thirds, after that it just works as any compost to be honest.

The backdrop with hot composts is that there aren’t any worms in the finished compost, it becomes just too warm for them to survive. I have very few worms in my garden except for where I’ve left nature to roam as it wishes because of the ground almost only consists of sand. So lets hope this compost helps with getting more worms in the ground 🙂 It would be great if we could get warmer nights now, I have bell peppers and tomato plants I want to move out to the greenhouse. The problem this north as I live is that clear nights usually means cold nights and with a few exceptions we’ll have clear and sunny weather for quite some time from now. One or two cloudy days and perhaps some rain so I don’t think I can move out anything at the moment.

Still today was really nice and perhaps the warmer day so far (with means a rather cold night) and I’ve enjoyed it fully. Monsterkitten has been playing with the dogs every now and again but mostly the dogs have been in the way when I’ve been trying to do something 🙂 🙂 They were really interested when I emptied the compost 🙂 There were two people looking at the empty cottage down the road, just on the outside space and they didn’t stay for more than perhaps fifteen minutes. I guess seeing that wild hogs have been digging in the garden sort of puts anyone off 🙂 🙂

It is time for something to eat and I’ll have that last cup of tea for the day at the same time. I think the ice cream lorry will come tomorrow so that’ll make the weekend so much nicer 🙂

Have a great day!

It has been hot in Virginia, with no rain, and yesterday I noticed some blue-green crusty patches in my front yard where the full afternoon sun hits. I’ve never seen them before, but maybe they are the moss getting dried and fried?

I’ll try to remember to take a photo and put it on one of your posts on Bluesky. Maybe you will recognize it.

My bugleweed seems to be fading and the grassy weeds are sticking up all over, so it’s time for the first mowing, but I still have many delicate little pale blue flowers all over that I hate to kill.

      Hi catsworking!

It can be dried moss, if all water is gone they do tend to become hard.

It’s more or less only garden flowers in bloom here now and not especially Many of those either to be honest. If we can have a row of warmer nights I’m pretty sure it’ll explode with flowers 🙂

Hi, Christer! We had another cold spell here with rain. I planted a bunch of seeds in the ground and was hoping that it would stay warm, but no. I was encouraged to see seedlings come up, though, both at home and in my community garden patch. At least I will have peas, lettuce and spinach! Green food is good for you!

I will go back to the community garden this weekend to see if the beets have sprouted. Who knows?

I still can’t make myself eat ice cream in cold weather 🙄. My daughter and son in law love it, and keep offering to share!

I nneed to find a recipe for rose hip soup.

    have a good week!

      Hi Carol!

Guess that if the temperature didn’t drop below 32F Those seeds still will start to grow. I have almost all my sowings in the cottage still because we’ll have lots of nights that it’ll drop below here. I can’t move out all I have in the greenhouse so I can move the sowings there just because of those cold nights, so annoying. Not unusual here in April though and it usually becomes more stable in May. Beets are tough so I’m pretty sure they’ll start growing 🙂

I can check in my old cookbooks after a rose-hip soup recipe if You want?
I can have ice cream any day 🙂

It looks like the earth is waking up from winter, Christer, and that is nice sight. I have fallen behind in blog reading and commenting, but now that we are back from our travels (for a while) I hope to catch up.

      Hi Beatrice!

It finally does 🙂 I only wish we could have warmer nights though, my neighbour has had to scrape ice from his car every morning this week 🙂 🙂 🙂
