A slow say.

It has been a slow day today, I haven’t done much than having a walk with the dogs, Alma couldn’t behave at all today so it was a constant war between her and I. She’s in heat so I guess that’s why she’s utterly impossible at the moment.

I have made jam though. I had three big quince fruits that I needed to do something with so I thought jam would be the thing to do. One of the fruits wasn’t nice though so I tossed in the berries I picked before the first frost arrived, mostly strawberries (that didn’t taste a thing) and gooseberries that tasted a lot.

Turns out that the strawberries taste a lot in the jam and I can’t taste anything from the gooseberries 🙂 🙂 🙂 I can however taste a bit of quince 🙂 The jam will work perfectly with pancakes though, so instead of pancake Saturday we’ll have a pancake Sunday 🙂

There were some kernels in the quinces so I’ll sow them later today, the wet paper towel method. Put the seeds in a damp paper towel (and cover the kernels with it) and put it in a plastic bag and then in to the fridge. If they are viable they’ll start to germinate in a couple of months. I’m not sure what to have for dinner today though.

I have some sausages and meatballs in the freezer and I think I have an egg or two (must have three for the pancakes tomorrow though) plus some baked beans. That sounds rather nice to be honest but I can skip dinner as well and only have a few hard breads with cheese and ham, that’s not bad either 🙂

Have a great day!

  1. Hi Christer,
I love the black and white bird photo.
You reminded me of how I grew my little quince bush from some seeds that I got from a quince I found buried in the snow under the old quince bush. There were 5 seeds which I put in the damp paper towels and into the fridge. Three of them sprouted but only Little Quincey managed to grow. That was 8 years ago. After being nibbled to the ground by bunnies twice in its early days, it finally managed to have 3 flowers this past spring. One tough little bush.
Reading the post about the dog igloos, I wanted to say that they make heavy duty hand sewing needles for leather, carpet canvas, upholstery and other heavy fabrics. Those would probably work for you if you haven’t already found something. The US gauge for them is 90/14 or 100/16. I don’t know if those numbers have any correlation in Europe.

    1. Hi Caryn!
I’m glad You do, the only problem is that I don’t have any black and white photos 🙂 🙂 🙂 The problem with winter is how the snow and frost makes everything else look like black 🙂 🙂 🙂
It is one tough little bush 🙂 The ones I sowed around the same time are growing nicely but haven’t even come close to flowering. They haven’t been freezing or hit by pests or diseases but still no flowers on them so now I really hope they’ll do that this year!

I was thinking of those kind of sewing needles so I’ll take a look at that today, thanks for the tip!
      Have a great day!
