I didn’t know they were on.

So the moose hunt has begun so we can’t take our walks in the forest today (nor yesterday). Well they left pretty early yesterday so we might be able to go there later today but the lovely sunshine will most likely be gone by then. The temperature fell down to 0C (32F) this morning but the sun shone so it was still pretty nice to stand on the kitchen stairs and drink a cup of tea.

There’s an old well behind the fence.

I would have loved to take a walk in the village but since Albin and Alma behaves like they do when ever they see anything moving or a cat or dog sitting still it really is impossible to do that any more. They scream and howl and Albin gets so excited that he ends up biting Alma (well once he bit my knee 🙂 🙂 🙂 He doesn’t bite hard, sort of nibbles but if some skin gets caught it leaves a bruise). Then again Alma is pretty though towards him and I do find marks all over his body when they’ve been playing in the garden.

So anyway, yesterday I thought it would be a great idea to walk out in the empty cow pasture just outside my garden. It’s fairly big and usually free from any wildlife during the days as well. Plus I was a bit curious about what walks there at night. Two nights ago Alma (and Albin too for once) barked furiously towards something walking there. It was pitch black so I couldn’t see anything at all. My close neighbors and I wondered if it possibly could be wild hogs. So in we walk and no signs of any pig activity, not even from the piglet that always escapes from his enclosure.

Apples growing on my seed sown apple tree, they are delicious.

What I did see though was what I call badger paths. Badgers tend to walk the same route every night and after a while they have made clear paths on te ground. So my guess is that it is badgers they’re barking at. We walked around in the pasture a while and went back home again. We did the same routine in the afternoon too. What i didn’t think of the first time we walked there was that there are two metal wires on the ground. I might have gotten caught in one of them but wearing rubber boots I didn’t notice anything. We did however notice it a lot when we went in the second time, there is electricity in them!

Well sometimes there’s a deer in the pasture during the day but this one jumped away quickly.

So when we went back to walk home I wasn’t sure how to pass them without the dogs getting electrocuted by them again. So this time I just dropped the leashes and let the dogs run fast and jump over them 🙂 🙂 No problems at all but I doubt that I’ll be able to make them walk in to that pasture willingly again. I could bring something to cover the wires but Albin and Alma will most likely panic and refuse to walk on what ever I place above the wires. So today the dogs will have to be content with the garden unless the hunters leave early. The hunting group here has two areas not far from each other and they do quite often divided the time between them, half day here and half day there.

The laundry is done and it is time to start making dinner for next week at work. This week I’ll have thick ribs 🙂

Have a great day!!

  1. Hi Christer,
Do you think the pasture owner is wondering why the electric bill is so high? 🙂 Though I remember with electric horse fencing we had to make sure no vegetation was touching the wire because that would break the circuit or something.
Today is supposed to be lovely, if cool and crisp. It’s just after sunrise so we’ll see. It’s 39⁰F.
    Have a great day.

    1. Hi Caryn!

Well someone is leasing their pastures so I guess they’ll bring in that money from him 🙂 🙂 I am however wondering if the whole fence system is depended on those wires being connected. Then again why make it look as if they aren’t connected by letting them lie on the ground, can’t be especially effective to be honest 🙂 🙂 🙂

Still sunny and nice here but the hunters are still out there unfortunately, I saw lots of mushrooms when we walked last Friday but didn’t bring anything to bring them home in. I hope they’ll leave soon so I can get those mushrooms 🙂 🙂

      Have a great day!

  2. Christer,
I don’t think I’d want winter to come this soon. I complain if it gets down at night lower than the 50’s. Right now the weather is perfectly fall as we get 60’s during the day and 50’s at night.

The dogs come and go through the dog door. Both love being in the yard, but Nala tends to stay out longer. If she is out a long time, I’m always afraid she’s found an animal of sorts. She has had 3 possums and one squirrel. With Gracie, I was always afraid she had found her way out of the yard.

Henry barks at anything that moves including cars and people. Nala hardly ever barks. Nala is the nipper when she starts playing and getting excited. Both she and Henry eat each other’s faces the they play. The only bites I’ve had from Henry were bad, the last being the worst, but I had to stop them hurting each other. I am a slow learned I think.

    Take care!

    1. Hi Kat!

I want a warm and windy winter so that our electricity falls down in price due to all the wind power plants we have here in the south 🙂 🙂 Most nights are still fairly warm here but every now and again it drops down to well below 32F and I don’t like it at all.

Alma tends to jump over the fence and explore my neighbors garden and to jump out in front of cars, Albin stays in the garden but usually for a much longer time than Alma. Nova stays indoors sleeping on the sofa 🙂 🙂

Besides barking on Badgers the dogs have quieted down pretty much when they’re in the garden. It’s a totally different thing when we’re out walking, so every time we go for walks I really hope none of the two loud ones see anything that will start them.

Albin bit (or perhaps nibbled) the beekeeper the other day, I would have preferred that it was me he had done that to. Now I need to keep an eye on him all the time.
I’ve always kept my hands away from my dogs when they have been fighting, it’s easier to just go to the vet and fix those bites on the dogs than on me 🙂 🙂 Also it is always a good thing to have a pitcher filled with water around if they start fighting, nothing stops fighting dogs as good as making them wet.

Have a great day and take care of that finger!

      Christer.
