Category: Autumn.

We were supposed to have lots of rain today and we certainly have had lots of it. A more constant rain in the early morning but more heavy showers for the rest of the day. We have also had lots of sunshine but being outside was a bit troublesome since one never could see when the showers arrived 🙂

If this tree had fallen in the wrong direction my neighbors cars would have been hit. It fell towards the dog yard but didn’t reach it from what I could see.

The crab apples in the forest are slowly turning red. These taste really nice but have a slightly bitter after taste.

We did manage to have a morning walk in the forest though, no hunters would willingly go out just to get caught in rain over and over again 🙂 Strong winds during the night and I woke up by a loud crack while the rian hit my cottage. I didn’t think much of it to be honest but when I noticed that a huge tree beside the dog yard had broken and half the tree now was lying on the ground I thought it was that I had heard. Turns out that I was wrong, the tree had broken the day before when the storm passed by, what I had heard was the lightning hit nearby. Turns out I had several lightning warnings on my phone that I hadn’t noticed 🙂

I couldn’t see any damages in the forest though. I did see lots of mosquitoes, they were all over us but it looks like the fly season has ended. More flies will come and those are Moose flies, nasty little monsters to be honest, almost impossible to kill and they do have a nasty bite even though they rarely do bite.  If we’re lucky last winter killed lots of the larvae plus it has been so wet that lots of the larvae who lives in the ground and pupae have drowned this year. We have had fewer ticks this year because of the weather so I do hope it’s the same with the moose flies.

I’ve done my chores today and we’ve also had our pancakes, this time I had my home made strawberry jam 🙂 There was almost nothing left of the cherry jam. After that we had a long nap, at least two hours. I did wake up every now and again because the back wasn’t happy when I tried to move 🙂 I haven’t made dinner for the entire week at work though, I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to eat so I just took what I had in the fridge and that will last for two days, better than nothing 🙂

It is time for a cup of coffee I think, normally I only drink tea but sometimes one feel that need of an extra kick from caffeine 🙂 I can’t say that the long nap helped to make me feel more energetic so I doubt some coffee will keep me up all night 🙂

Have a great day!

Autumn flowering strawberries?!

I did see the sun slowly rising above the forest when I woke up so the first thing we did was to have our morning walk. It didn’t take long before clouds covered the sun but the walk was quite nice anyway. WE walked in to the village again and today one of the dogs was outside when we passed.

This was the last we saw of the sun while we were out walking but it did come back for a long time later in the day.

If I as a human would walk on old stone age tombs or move a single stone they would arrest me but cattle can damage it as much as they can and the owner wouldn’t risk being arrested 🙂
We have quite a lot of crab apples in the village, these apples taste horrible 🙂 🙂

I was so glad to see that all my dogs behaved perfectly while the dog we passed barked like crazy, it was especially fun to see how the owner opened the door to try and quiet the dog, didn’t work at all 🙂 🙂 🙂 So I must say that Alma’s behaviour has become so much better. Ok she pulled the leash a lot after all that excitement but she didn’t make even the tiniest sound and that’s a huge change. Malkolm did sort of bark twice but since Alma and Nova were quiet he stopped as well. Really good for a seven month old puppy 🙂

The branch doesn’t look that big but it was and it was quite heavy as well 🙂

The only problem I’ve had today is my back. My immune system attacks my spine (and most of the cartilage in my joints, slowly but steadily, I got my first hip implant when I was 38) and most of the time I can take it but times like today it’s just nasty. The best thing I can do is to move use my back a lot and after a while the pain goes away, so today I picked up things that had flown around in the storm yesterday, I even moves away a big branch that fallen down on the gravel road and also watering the trees and bushes with the big water pitcher. Didn’t that hurt You might ask? Yes like insanely but now in the early evening it feels much better 🙂 Tomorrow and several mornings ahead will be much the same but this will pass. I can’t take any anti inflammatory medicines because I destroyed my stomach with one of those, it was amazing as long as it lasted though 🙂

This little oak always have lots of acorns even when other trees haven’t.

I went outside in the storm yesterday just before it went dark. I already knew I had planted my Black walnut way too close to the cottage, I did that just because I never thought it would survive 🙂 🙂 17 years now and it still stands 🙂 🙂 However when we have winter storms it doesn’t move that much but with all leafs still on it it almost reached the roof of the cottage, not good! I really don’t want to remove it but I might have to in a year or two. What worried me more though was the two huge Birches over at my neighbors, if they fall half of my cottage will follow them to the ground 🙂 🙂 🙂 Well I have home insurance so I’ll get another one built up if that would happen. The only thing is that my bedroom would be the first thing they hit 🙂 🙂 🙂

My Hardy Hibiscus finally shows the colors of the coming flower.
I seem to have autumn flowering strawberries, didn’t know that excisted, so I’ll pick each ripe berry when they are ready and put them in the freezer.

A few Apples had fallen off as well so I bent down and picked them up, took a bit longer to stand up straight again 🙂 🙂 and went in and made an apple crumb pie, it tasted so yummy 🙂 I did add some coconut to it and that made a big difference.

It is raining outside, it isn’t supposed to but what does the rain care about that? It’s a misty rain, You know the kind that looks like mist or fog and that always eat its way through the clothes no matter how You dress. They’re guessing it’ll be like that most parts of tomorrow as well so it’ll be a perfect day to take a long nap 🙂

Have a great day!

I took this photo on my way to work one morning, nothing special a Roe deer in a field but take a look behind it.
I never saw the giant Red deer standing in the shadow by the trees just behind it 🙂 🙂 🙂

A storm passing by.

The weather was rather nice this morning while I drove to work but not so nice when I drove back home. Now there’s a storm passing by, it rains on and off plus the sky is mostly evenly grey. The dogs are outside only when they really need to do their business and then runs straight back indoors again. It’s fairly warm though so even if we’re closing in to when we normally have our first frost I’m pretty sure it won’t come tonight 🙂 I’ve just taken a look at the weather sites and all show that nights will be so warm that there’s no risk of frost the coming ten days 🙂

The storm will have passed already tonight so with a bit of luck we’ll have a pretty nice morning walk with a chance of sunshine. I don’t have high hopes about the sunshine though, the sun usually only start to show when we’re almost at home 🙂 🙂

People at work are already giving me tips on where they might need more people and the atmosphere at work has never been as bad as it is right now but I know for sure that they won’t change their minds about me. I’m still not worried the least though because I’ll take any job there is as long as the work hours aren’t during nights. One thing annoyes me even though I know people mean well, many have said that they miss me already 🙂 🙂 🙂 For heavens sake can’t they wait to do that until I’m actually gone 🙂 🙂 🙂 I’m still talking to everyone every day after all 🙂 🙂 🙂

No new photos today because of the weather but I do have old analog photos (for those who don’t know what I mean with that, I quite often use the old film cameras and I have loads of those photos here in my computer) I can show and also made a folder called “For a rainy day”. Today is a rainy day so that works fine 🙂 It is time for a last cup of tea for the day and after that perhaps watch some tv, well I tend to fall asleep in front of the tv to be honest but that’s just as good or perhaps even better than to watch what’s on the telly 🙂

These photos are taken with an old camera called Agfa Flexilette. It was never popular to be honest. It’s a twin lens reflex camera and that means that one is looking through a separate lens via the view finder but take the photo with a separate lens beneath the view finder.  Here’s a link to Google that will show photos of that camera: Flexilette

Have a great day!

I didn’t expect that after 17 in the same work place.

I’ve been a bit distant lately and that’s because after working for 17 years at my work place I’ll have to quit my job. Not because I’ve done something wrong in any way but because my employer decided that I should start working four days a week (Monday till Thursday) from 4:25 pm to 03:00 am the next day. I told them I can’t do that for several reasons, I normally sleep from 9 pm to around 4:am and can’t just change my sleeping habits like that. They did this to me last autumn and I still have problems from that. I also can’t have my dogs in the dog yard because they bark like crazy as soon as any animal passes by.

The badger walks along my garden every night now days, deer pass by, our fox comes for visits and not forgetting all the cats that live here. If they bark they’ll wake up my neighbors and both the adults and the kids need their sleep and it’s illegal to have the dogs locked up in the cottage for so many hours without contact with humans plus I would have to clean up the entire cottage every morning when i come home every morning because they do need to do their business and I can’t let them out to do it. Unfortunately employers here can treat their employees just as bad as they want to without the union doing anything when it comes to at least my union.

If I come to work in the morning instead to work I won’t be paid and if I don’t come in the afternoon when they say I must work I will be charged (is that the right word?) with unauthorized absence and when that has happened too many times I’ll be charged with refusal to work and then they’ll fire me and I will never be able to find a new job with that hanging over me. So my last day will be on September 16, the day after I’ve had my sixtieth birthday. Anyway this is all I really can write about it now because I will still work there for a few more weeks. I must admit though that I’m feeling just fine, no worries at all and since I’m willing to take any job as long as I don’t have to work at night I’m pretty sure I’ll find a new job fairly quick, I at least hope so 🙂 🙂 🙂

The rain has poured down here today so for the first time in a long time I didn’t have to water anything when I came home after work 🙂 The Ice cream lorry passed by but since I now need to keep an eye on my finances I never went out to buy any ice cream, it felt a bit sad but better start now than when it is too late. On the other side I now I have two more Red mulberry trees 🙂 🙂 🙂 To my defence I bought those before I knew about this 🙂 🙂 🙂 These two will stay in my cool cellar during winter and then I’ll find a place for them in the garden next spring 🙂 The one I already have will be planted this weekend I think, I wonder where 🙂 🙂

The Rowan trees gives loads of berries this year. One can make the most delicious jelly from them even though the berries themselves are pretty tart.

This is a Jerusalem artichoke called Bianca. Normally it starts to flower at the end of September so it’s around a month early. I guess it’s because we had that long heatwave in May.

Time for a last cup of tea and then snooze in front of the tv 🙂

Have a great day!

I was surprised today!

DSC_3723

The rest of this weekend has been much less eventful and I’m so grateful for that 🙂 🙂 However I keep finding a lot of wasp queens here indoors and I have no idea how they get in here. Normally I try to just catch and release them but lately they have been a bit angry so I’ve had no other choice than to kill them. I don’t like that but I just can’t have angry wasps flying around in my home.

We went out to the bog this morning and everything was just fine. Nova leash free as always a bit ahead of us and the rest of us following her. We went out on the peninsula and stayed there for a few minutes and turned back homewards again. Then suddenly Nova, 17 years old, started to run on the path. Albin did look a bit worried frowning and Alma did suddenly behave as if she had been to obedience school. So I guess we might have had a wolf rather close to us. I never see them though even if I now days quite often look back to see if anything is following us. I guess wolves just are too smart to follow us on the roads or paths.

My orchid is finally opening up its flowers. They don’t smell anything but that’s quite common with orchids we have in our homes. I think it’ll get at least four more flower stalks before it’s season is over. The flowers look a bit more yellowish in the photos than they do in the real but I guess that’s because I used a flash when I took the photos.

I also found something in my garden that made me really surprised! I found four fruits beneath my Black walnut!!! I haven’t even seen it in bloom. At first I thought it was odd that I found four figs beneath the canopy since my fig tree stands closer to the kitchen door but then I picked them up and realized that it was walnuts 🙂 I know I should have waited to open up any of the fruits but I just wanted to see how big the nut would be, so I opened the smallest one. I figured that since it is so small I’d rather plant it in a pot and place it outside, if it germinates there’s always someone who would want a walnut tree and if not the forest is quite big and most people would see it as an ash tree instead 🙂 🙂

DSC_3724
I’ve started to bring in more of what is going to spend winter in my cool cellar, like these apricot trees.

DSC_3725
They do look like figs, don’t they?

I didn’t win the lottery so tomorrow it’s back to work again, it is at least a short work week this time. It’s dark outside now but tomorrow morning I’ll check if there are any more walnuts in the tree. To be honest I’m happy about the four I got since I didn’t think I would get any at all but as we say here: much wants more 🙂 🙂 🙂

Have a great day!

I’ve never scolded them this much before.

Only photos from old cameras today. I’ve just had two films developed and this photo comes from the Minolta 8000i.

A ferocious storm has just passed by, still quite windy but much less than what it was when I drove home last night. We also had heavy rainfall so I never thought that any animals would be outside foraging, so I didn’t think twice about the dogs hurrying to the back of the garden, I guessed that they wanted to do their business quickly and then indoors to the cottage. Suddenly I heard Alma and Albin barking like crazy.

Turns out there was at leas one animal, a young badger, walking around and also in my garden! The dogs should be happy that it was just a young one and not the big male badger that visited us. Albin attacked the poor badger from behind and Alma towards the front. Thankfully I wore my head lamp so I saw what was happening and started to shout and try to get both Alma and Albin away from the poor badger, also jumping around like crazy so that none of them would bite me. Then suddenly the badger got a good bite (and held on to) Alma’s lip. So Alma started to shout because now she was the one attacked and it hurt. The brave Albin then ran away and the badger let go of Alma.

Badgers have a really thick fur so I think that was what Albin was holding on to. I managed to take a good look at the badger (because it sat still for a few seconds) and when it left it didn’t limp. Also Alma’s lip was a bit swollen but ok already now this morning. If it had been father badger both Alma and Albin would have been badly injured because he would not have let them get away with anything like this without them paying badly for it. So on Monday I’ll buy lots of nuts and go to where the badgers live and pour it out close to the opening in a sort of way to apologize for Almas and Albins behaviour.

I scolded those two so much that when we went to bed they didn’t dare coming close to me 🙂 🙂 🙂 They have also behaved very well all day today so perhaps I actually managed to get something in to their heads, normally I don’t. It is times like this when I miss the old dogs as most. If any of the six old dogs would have met a badger in the garden they would just have greeted it and went on on their merry way to do other things (Nova behaves just like that as well). Despite all the commotion in my garden five meters away from my neighbors cottage they didn’t hear a thing. The storm was hitting their cottage in full force so there were enough noise to filter away the dogs and I 🙂 🙂 🙂

I doubt that we’ll have a badger visit in the garden for quite some time again but I will check the garden before I let the dogs out tonight. I mean it’s one thing with the dogs, I can always get them to a vet but what would I do with an injured, angry and scared badger? It’s not like I could just toss it into the old cat carrier and bring it to the vet 🙂

They gave up early.

DSC_3501

Another quite lovely day here. A bit chilly in the morning but the sun did its work and the temperature rose up to 10C (50F), very little wind as well so I could have the kitchen door open for quite some time.

The hunters gave up pretty early, not surprised since I’ve only seen two moose tracks since early July. So we’ve had a couple of really nice walks today. This nice weather unfortunately also made the few moose flies we still have pretty energetic, at least none of them landed on my neck like yesterday. Those moose flies are no more thankfully.

They are now investigating whether we should have the European bison, the Wisent, roaming our forests again. I think they died out a couple millennia ago, perhaps because humans hunted them to extinction or perhaps for another reason, we don’t know. I’m not sure what I would feel about that, it’s another huge animal I would risk hitting with my car while driving to and from work. Then again since moose now are quite rare here in southern Sweden it sort of would even it out. I guess that hunters would like it since they sooner or later most likely would be allowed to hunt them as well.

If they do allow it I think we also should allow the European pond turtle back and why not the Black rat, this warmer climate would fit them both well and I’m pretty sure the Black rat wouldn’t help spreading the plague again, we just need to make sure the rats they bring here doesn’t have those lice that carried the disease 🙂 🙂 🙂 We already have the Red-eared slider here ( even though it still is a bit too long winter for them to reproduce) so why not the one that actually lived here so long ago.

Tomorrow will also be really nice and we might get frost once again. I didn’t win the lottery so I’ll have to go to work again. It’s a long work week and to be honest it actually feels worse on Monday knowing we have to work on Friday as well than it feels working on that Friday 🙂 🙂

Have a great day!

Strong winds.

DSC_0006

WE had a lovely morning with sunshine and slightly chilly temperature, The wind was strong though and the gusts even stronger. No hunters out in weather like that (and certainly not in the kind of weather we’re having now), so we went out for a walk. Nova finally got what she wanted so out to the bog we went.

The moose fly season hasn’t ended, I found out that after we had come home when one of them were walking on my neck, that fly is no more 🙂 Anyway, we walked out on the peninsula that she loves to walk to and while we stood there for a while I think I actually could hear two wolves howling. They must have been far away and the wind drowned the sound every time a strong gust passed by.  So I can’t say that I’m sure I’m right but when that sound reached us the dogs suddenly were in a hurry to go back home again. Due to their reaction I’m pretty sure it was wolves howling.

Especially since it’s the last two days of the moose hunt premiere no humans would be out there shouting and to be honest I doubt that any hunters, even in the neighbor hunting areas would be out a day like today. Trees will be falling in these gusts so even an avid hunter wouldn’t risk their life today. So since the dogs were in a hurry we hurried back to the village. I can’t say I was worried though because they were far away and the wind wasn’t in the direction towards the wolves so they would be able to figure out where we were. They did calm down the closer we came to the village though.

Yesterday when I walked around in the garden I suddenly found the last of the cacti I had placed in the trees during summer. I had apparently placed it high up in the summer apple tree. It wasn’t damaged by the frost so I replanted it in a bigger pot and brought it indoors. I have no idea what kind of soil it should have but I think it is one of those living as an epiphyte on trees and I figure that epiphytes can’t get any lime from the rain water so it shouldn’t require lime in the soil, so I used some of the rhododendron soil I still have. I finally did find a spot for it but anything I now find outdoors that needs to be brought inside will live in the cool cellar during winter, no matter what it is 🙂

One thing I’ve really missed now when I realized that I can’t eat gluten is Digestive crackers. I used to eat them almost every week, preferable with some blue cheese or cheese like camembert or just a strong normal cheese. The ones I’ve found in stores are more or less inedible and only a person that lacks any kind of taste buds would eat them with joy 🙂 🙂 So I found a recipe on the net and baked them yesterday. They are much better than the bought ones but still just barely ok. Too brittle and way too sweet. The sweetness is easily fixed but fixing brittle is a bit more difficult. There are plenty of recipes out there though so I’ll continue until I find the best one.

The weather now is very different from this morning. The wind is even stronger and the gusts have reached storm strength. I can only hear it because my neighbors cottage an´d garage takes almost all the wind. The roaring in the trees when the gusts comes are so loud now that even Alma has started to look out the windows to see what makes that noise 🙂 🙂 Tomorrow will be sunny and less windy so I guess the hunters will be back but hopefully they’ll be gone before the sun sets so we can have a nice walk.

We had meh weather here this morning. It wasn’t cold but not especially warm either, It was cloudy but it didn’t rain and no gaps in the clouds where the sun had a chance to shine through but it was still kind of nice. Nova wanted to go out to the bog but I thought that we had been there almost too often lately so we walked down to the creek instead. Then she wanted to walk in to the forest there but I managed to persuade her to follow the creek down-stream instead. I was a bit surprised that she wasn’t cranky for the rest of the walk because she usually is when she doesn’t get her way 🙂 🙂

We walked out to the bog and on our way back, Nova walked like always ten meters ahead of the rest of us, suddenly a huge wild hog bor rushed out from the bushes beside the path we were walking on and in the the bushes on the other side 🙂 🙂 🙂 It happened so fast that neither Nova nor Albin even noticed it 🙂 🙂 Alma did however and for a couple of minutes she was screaming like obcessed and then suddenly calmed down like nothing had happened 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think that we might have reached the end of the moose fly season now. Not a single one landed on me or the dogs yesterday or today. The mosquitoes are all gone so it would be nice if we from now on also could be moose fly free as well. Still ticks though but very few, it is getting too chilly for them as well. Wasps however seems to find their way in to my home every day now though. Every now and again a big wasp queen tries to fly through my windows and I have to catch and release them. They do a lot of good by eating flies all summer so if I can save them I’ll do it.

The only orchid I now have has been hanging in the apple tree all summer. I’ve watered it once or twice but that’s it. I brought it in just before the last frost and hung it by my kitchen door. I was looking at it yesterday when I was thinking it perhaps was time to water it again. It did look a bit odd and then I realized that what I looked at was a bunch of flower buds. If I see the signs right there is at least three more bunches on the way. Many months earlier than I though any would show but who cares 🙂 🙂 I almost broke the stem when I lowered the pot in to a bucket full with rain water 🙂 🙂 I really need to replant is and perhaps divide it in to two or four new plants but when ever I do that to orchids they die, also I have no idea what kind of soil or substrate it should grow in. Well I don’t need to think about that until after the new year has started.

Yes the frost did arrive last night and just as I was on my way to bed I remembered that I had the rest of the cacti and the orchid to move indoors. So out I went at around midnight with a light on my head to find all of them and to bring them indoors. I brought in all of them except for the thorny one and one more. There was a bitterly cold wind blowing so if any mosquito had survived the night they were at least not flying around. There was one moose fly though and it fell down behind my t-shirt on my back. The feeling on Monday the week I know I’ll also work on Friday is actually far worse than it feels to work on that Friday 🙂 🙂 Still it isn’t fun but when things works as they should it’s quite ok. Still I would rather not have to so I’m holding my thumbs for the lottery today 🙂 🙂

It has been a rather nice day even though a bit too chilly and a storm that arrived yesterday also continued for quite some time today. The winds were north north-western so arctic cold has cooled down our days rather a lot, we’ll have our first frost tonight so the radiators are working downstairs. I’ve also ordered a new radiator because Alma and Albin were playing so wildly one day a couple of weeks ago that the sofa fell straight into the radiator. The plastic “feet” to the radiator broke into thousands of pieces.

I guess I could have tried to just order new “feet”, if that’s even possible but since the radiator hit the floor pretty hard I do want to try it while I am at home to see that the hit hasn’t broken it. It is one of those oil filled ones and since no oil has leaked I’m pretty sure it still is ok and one can never have too many radiators. I have one old radiator left of those who were here when I moved here and one never know for how long that one will keep going.

The morning walk was really nice, despite it being a bit too chilly. The wind was so strong that no insect that values its life would fly around in it 🙂 The sun shone from early morning and did its best to make the day nice but it had huge problems with that 🙂 We walked in the forest though so most of the wind was stopped by the trees. Nova wanted to go out to the bog again but I persuaded her to walk down to the creek and there she could decide whether we should follow it up or down-stream. She chose up-stream and the older forest. We did however go out to the bog in a later walk when the wind had calmed some so she did get her way eventually 🙂

The moose hunt starts tomorrow so we won’t be able to have any walks for most of next week. The hunting leader did however say that there will be times when they won’t be out there and he will text me when that happens. Personally I would have liked to take a walk in the village again but since I’ve never managed to make Albin and Alma behave when they see something moving, like a jogger or biker or a dog that is happy to see them, we really can’t take a walk there any more. Also there’s still cattle in tye huge pasture so we can’t walk there either.

So I can look forward to a week when I don’t have to leave the cottage at all before I go to work every day 🙂 I’ll just relax close to a radiator, perhaps reading a book or so 🙂

Have a great day!

Chilly wind.

It looked really nice outside when I woke up in the morning and looked out through the windows but it wasn’t. The sun was shining but the strong wind we had was way to chilly. That changed later in the day thankfully.

Nova wanted to go out to the bog again this morning so that’s where we went. One good thing with the strong and chilly wind was that most mosquitoes and moose flies blew away. I did kill one mosquito so I had to get rid of a blood stain when I came home 🙂 and the one moose fly that landed on me is no more either 🙂

I was going to do so much today but I never came around to it. To be honest, all I’ve done today is to do dog walks, some of the laundry and pancakes, I have no idea what I’ve been doing for the rest of the day 🙂 🙂 So I guess I can say that it has been a good day 🙂

They say we’ll get sunny and warm weather tomorrow so I hope I can come around to start picking the apples on my apple tree. I did after all buy one of those fruit picking things, the ones one can reach way up in the tree without having to risk the life by climbing on a ladder 🙂 I’ve bought what I need to try and preserve apples the way we always can buy pear halves in. Apples can of course be stored in my cool cellar for quite some time but I really want to try this. Pears on the other hand can’t be stored at all to be honest so I guess that’s why one never see preserved apple halfs in the stores 🙂
